 We Are UCM: 150 Years of Education for Service

Date: Feb. 1-12
Location: Student Recreation and Wellness Center
Join us as we celebrate UCM’s 150 years of Education for Service with the following campus events! More information about all of these events can be found at https://www.ucmo.edu/current-students/student-experience/special-events/homecoming/.

Door DecoratingThe Door Decorating Contest is open to students, faculty/staff, offices/organizations, and local businesses. Doors should reflect the We Are UCM theme. Decorating is Feb. 1 at 8 a.m. through Feb. 5 at 5 p.m. Winners will be announced on Feb. 12. For more details, and to submit your door for consideration, visit https://www.ucmo.edu/current-students/student-experience/special-events/homecoming/.

Bowling for Kids’ Sake: Feb. 9 from 8-11 p.m. for Fraternity and Sorority Life organizations and Feb. 10 from 7-11 p.m.  for Housing organizations and recognized student organizations. Stop by the Union Bowling Center to help raise funds for a worthy cause! Participants will pay $10, and all funds received will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Campus Community Project: Feb. 11 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Stop by the Elliott Student Union to participate in a variety of volunteer projects that will benefit the Warrensburg community. This event is open to the UCM and the Warrensburg communities.

Donation Creation: Feb. 12 from 2-4 p.m.
Donation Creation is an opportunity for student organizations to show their creativity with charitable donations. Each organization will gather nonperishable food items to create a 3D scene that represents “We Are UCM: Education for Service.” Creations will be judged based on creativity, relation to the theme and originality. Donations will go to the UCM Campus Cupboard and the Warrensburg Food Pantry. The student organization that donates the most canned goods will receive a prize and bragging rights!

We Are UCM Celebration: Feb. 12 at 4 p.m.
Join us in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center for the We Are UCM Celebration. Participants will demonstrate their school spirit at an event that includes the crowning of campus royalty, archival displays in the SRWC atrium, and a presentation of a plaque to UCM’s president recognizing hours of service donated by UCM students toward campus and community projects. Videos produced by students in the royalty competition in honor of UCM historic figures will be shown during the event. A presentation of awards recognizing winners of competitive student activities that occurred earlier in the week, also will take place. Plans are being made to make these activities available for viewing on Zoom.

 

3MT Competition

Date: Feb. 9 at 3:30 p.m.
Location: Elliott Student Union Auditorium

The UCM 3MT is a competition that develops academic, presentation, and research communication skills and supports the development of students' capacities to effectively explain their research to a general audience. Graduate students will have three minutes to present a compelling presentation on their research topic and its significance using only one PowerPoint slide. Competition will consist of live and virtual presentations.

 

Senate Resolution Presentation

Date: Feb. 10 at 11 a.m.
Location: Senate Floor of the Missouri State Capitol

The State of Missouri will present the University of Central Missouri with a Senate Resolution to recognize UCM's 150th anniversary. Due to COVID protocols, a public reception at the capitol has been cancelled.

 

MuleNation Florida: Celebrating 150 Years of UCM at Hampton Social in Naples, Florida

Date: Feb. 18 at 5 p.m.

Over There: Missouri and the Great War Exhibit

Date: March 1-May 7
Location: James C. Kirkpatrick Library

Explore Missouri’s role in World War I and the influence the war had on communities across the state. This event is sponsored by the UCM History Program, Kirkpatrick Library and UCM Military and Veteran Services.

 

PULSE-W Empowerment Summit

Date: March 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Location: Elliott Student Union

The second annual PULSE-W Empowerment Summit is a free one day event bringing women together from many different walks of life to discuss all things woman. PULSE strives to teach individuals in a Positive, Understanding, Learning, Supportive, and Educational way. We invite you to develop relationships with others who strive to make an impact, learn professional development skills, discuss current issues for women, engage in personal wellness activities, and much more. Crack the Codes: UCM Sesquicentennial Celebration Messages

Date: March 8 and 10 from 1-4 p.m.

Crack the codes, decrypt the messages and show us what you are capable of. This is a time sensitive mission (3 hours). If you crack all the messages, you will get a free ticket to the National Cyber League competition (online).

 

Midwest Rural Emergency Management Summit

Date: March 19 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
Location: Wood 100

Join professionals from local, state and federal agencies to discuss current best practices and lessons learned from a variety of disasters and emergencies. An overview of disaster theory will be presented, followed by case studies involving real incidents such as building collapses, tornadoes or gas leaks.

Historic Campus Tour and Ghost Buildings of the Great Fire

Date: April 1 at two available times: 7 p.m. for tour and 8 p.m. for the installation on the UCM Quad or 8 p.m. for the tour and 9 p.m. for the installation on the UCM Quad
Location: McClure Archives and UCM Quad

Join UCM for a free campus tour starting at the McClure Archives and University Museum in the James C. Kirkpatrick Library and ending at the Quad with a presentation and "footprint" installation of UCM's campus before the fire in 1915. Refreshments will be provided. This event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by UCM, Warrensburg Main Street, the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce and the Warrensburg Visitors Bureau. **This event has reached maximum capacity.**

 

Winning the Vote: World War I and the American Suffrage Movement

Date: April 6 at 6 p.m.
Location: Live virtual event with limited, ticketed seating in the Elliott Student Union Auditorium

Join the entire Campus Community for a virtual live presentation by Organization of American Historians Distinguished Lecturer Dr. Lynn Dumenil on “Winning the Vote: World War I and the American Suffrage Movement.” Her most recent book is The Second Line of Defense: American Women and World War I. Limited ticketed seating for this event will be available in the Elliott Student Union Auditorium. Graduate Scholars Symposium

Date: April 7, all day

The goal of the Symposium is to showcase the outstanding quality and diversity of graduate-level research and scholarship at UCM. Research and scholarly work from UCM graduate students, faculty and staff, from all disciplines, will be on display via website and campuswide electronic communication.

 

Safety Sciences Mock Accident

Date: April 7 from 9-11 a.m.
Location: West side of the UCM Quad in the brick circle

Every fall and spring semester, Safety Sciences students conduct realistic workplace accident investigations. Each year about 4,500 workers die from accidents on the job. It has been estimated that employers pay almost $1 billion per week for direct workers' compensation costs alone from accidents on the job. There are about 3,000,000 workplace accidents each year.

 

President's Gala

Date: April 12 at 7 p.m.
Location: Broadcast from the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts

The President’s Gala is an event that celebrates student, faculty and alumni collaboration while raising needed funds to extend the educational benefits of the School of Visual and Performing Arts. The event, which is free and open to the public, will showcase students’ work from each of the school’s three areas of study: Art and Design, Music, and Theatre and Dance. One highlight for the evening is a performance by celebrity UCM alumnus David Cook, ’06, whose musical career skyrocketed after he was named winner of the “American Idol” reality TV show in 2008. State of Missouri Bicentennial Quilt & State of Missouri Bicentennial 4-H Quilt Exhibition

Date: April 13-16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and April 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The McClure Archives and University Museum located in the James C. Kirkpatrick Library will host a special exhibition of the State of Missouri Bicentennial Quilt and the State of Missouri Bicentennial 4-H Quilt. The exhibition is free and open to the public! 

  

School of Accountancy Awards Reception

Date: April 22
Location: Ward Edwards 2401 and via livestream. 

The School of Accountancy will host a reception to recognize the accomplishments of our students. All alumni and friends are invited to join the celebration. However, capacity will be limited so please register at Accountancy Awards Reception.

 

Transitions, a UCM Wind Ensemble Concert

Date: April 22 at 7 p.m.
Location: Hendricks Hall

To mark the 150th anniversary, the UCM Wind Ensemble will present Transitions, a concert with selections chosen from the specific years that coordinate with UCM's name changes - 1871, 1919, 1946, 1972 and 2006. A new work will also be created and premiered to mark the 150th anniversary at this event. This event is free and open to the public.

 

The First Pitch Banquet

Date: April 23 at 6 p.m. 
Location: Multipurpose Building

Donors who have contributed $25,000 or more in their lifetime are invited to this special event where they will be inducted into the new Founders Society.

Date: April 27 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

UCM students, faculty and staff are invited to this picnic to celebrate 150 years of Education for Service. Everyone is invited to party like it's 1871! Join UCM as we gather for lunch, birthday cake, music, a reenactment of the night the location of State Normal School No. 2 (UCM) was awarded to Warrensburg and more. Each year at the close of both spring and fall semesters, UCM offers multiple commencement ceremonies for undergraduate and graduate candidates, hosted at the Multipurpose Building. UCM Sculpture and Memorials Tour

Date: July 16 at 9 a.m.
Location: McClure Archives

Join us for a one-hour walking tour of the UCM campus outdoor memorials and public sculptures. We will meet in the southwest corner inside the Kirkpatrick Library, and will depart at 9 a.m. This event is free and open to the public. It is a walking tour, so wearing comfortable shoes is recommended. 


President's Lawn Concert

Date: July 26 at 6 p.m.
Location: Selmo Park

Bring your family and friends to Selmo Park for UCM's President's Lawn Concert! Start by cooling off at 6 p.m. with ice cream and yard games. At 7 p.m., enjoy an evening of music by the Warrensburg Community Band. This event is free and open to the public. Feel free to bring your own lawn chairs or blankets. Get the Red Out

Date: Sept. 2
Location: Holden Street

Put on your Mule gear and help us Get the Red Out! Get the Red Out is a fun street fair, complete with inflatables, games for the kids, hoop shooting with the Mules and Jennies basketball teams, food trucks and dozens of other local organizations and vendors. Thousands of campus and community members attend the street fair each year, which takes place on Holden Street in Warrensburg between South and Clark streets. Get the Red Out is held on the afternoon of the first home football game each year, and is a cooperative community event sponsored by UCM and the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce. For more information, visit ucmo.edu/gtro.

Town and Gown: The Life and Legacy of Dr. Charles R. Mayes 

Date: Sept. 15 from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Join Dan Crews, professor of History, for this presentation on one of its alumni and scholarship founder Dr. Charles Mayes. Dr. Mayes' family members were among the first settlers of Warrensburg and did much to build the town and the university. He attended Central Missouri State Teachers College, and was a 1942 graduate. He served as a navigator in a B24 bomber during World War II and was shot down behind German lines. Aided by friendly Italians, the crew managed to climb and crawl back safely. After the war he entered graduate school, studied at the Sorbonne, and earned a Fulbright Scholarship for doctoral research in England. He became a distinguished historian of Early Modern Europe and England, and left a $200,000 endowment to fund scholarships for UCM history majors.

Criminal Justice and Criminology Alumni Showcase

Alumni from the program will display tools, technology and memorabilia and will be available to answer your questions about the day-to-day work of police, Highway Patrol, federal agencies, probation and parole, children's services, investigations and more.

Haunted Tour of Missouri State Penitentiary

Date: Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
Location: Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City, Missouri

A group of current students, alumni, faculty, and friends will discover the penitentiary's haunted past through a guided tour of the facility, highlighting its history and the strange and unexplained occurrences behind the walls. This event is co- hosted by the UCM Alumni Foundation and UCM Criminal Justice program. To register, visit ucmfoundation.org/2021mnjeffcity.

 

Western District Court of Appeals

Date: Oct. 13 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Location: Elliott Student Union 240
Providing an opportunity to bring the courts system to life, the Missouri Western District Court of Appeals holds oral arguments on campus. Three Appellate Justices will hear five cases, as well as host question-and-answer sessions about judicial careers and processes.

 

A Century in the Making: The Historical Roots of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Date: Oct. 19 at 4 p.m.

Join Dr. Michael Makara for this FREE lecture on the roots of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This is the 10th annual Paul J. and Colleen Nance Lecture, sponsored by the McClure Archives and University Museum.

 

Mule Tracks: UCM After 150 Years

The University of Central Missouri has a long and impactful history. Join KMOS PBS as we present a feature documentary of the history of UCM and its future. This event is free and open to the public.

 

Homecoming Weekend Celebration 

Date: Oct. 22-24

Homecoming is one of UCM’s longest-standing traditions and the largest campus and community party of the year! Alumni enjoy coming back to Warrensburg with their families and friends to reconnect with classmates and professors and to see how the university and city have changed. Students show their school spirit through weeklong competitions, the pep rally and parade!

Native American Trivia

Beyond the Circle

Date: Nov. 2 at 4 p.m.

Based upon the current social distancing guidelines, UCM is reimagining the Annual Trading
Moon Pow Wow as a Native American Dance and Arts exhibition featuring the group Beyond
the Circle. This will allow for a celebration of Native American arts through a staged
presentation while maintaining social distance for participants and audience
members. Individuals may choose to watch the livestreaming of the event or attend the live
performance. Beyond the Circle represents the Navajo, Ottawa, Ojibwe, Apache, Lakota, and Cherokee
tribes. This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Missouri Arts Council.

New Technologies Ensemble "Sonic Wanderings Through Time" Concert

Date: Dec. 5 at noon
Location: Hart Recital Hall

Join the New Technologies Ensemble as they create and perform a new concert-length composition incorporating the sampling of audio recordings from the history of the university, instruments from UCM’s Essig Collection in the McClure Archives and University Museum, and the sonification of data from the history of the school, representing change over time. 


Commencement

Location: Multipurpose Building

Each year at the close of both spring and fall semesters, UCM offers multiple commencement ceremonies for undergraduate and graduate candidates, hosted at the Multipurpose Building.
